Margaret Alice “Peggy” Samuels died at her home on March 17, 2025, surrounded by her family and dear friend Brittany.
Peggy was born on July 9, 1929 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Fred and Edith Hughes. She was the oldest of five siblings. She married the love of her life Clifford Samuels in 1947 and they had four children, Dan (Donna), Ken (Sharon), Jim (Wendy) and Marjie (Craig). She has 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Ken, and her husband, Clifford.
She earned her nursing degree from Ferris State College and went on to work in hospitals and ultimately worked for Dr. Ed VanAuken in Big Rapids. She later became the Director of the Mecosta County Commission on Aging. She served as a lay minister in the Episcopal Church and lovingly accepted everyone as part of her faith journey. Her joy always filled the room, but was also know as a fierce and feisty advocate for her family. Peggy also was a gifted writer, seamstress and baker.
Her Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church, 2010 Nichols Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49004. The family will greet friends at the church from noon until the time of the service. She had requested no flowers and instead asked that people contribute to their charity of choice, the ACLU, or Covenant House.
